Failure to Provide: Transitioning from TRIWEST to United Health Care

Twice a week, my kids and I make the 40 minute (one-way) trip for my son’s Occupational Therapy (OT) appointment. Sure, there are therapy centers that are closer, but I love my son's therapist. She has opened my son up to new experiences and taught him things that I would never think to do. Each and every week he is finding a sense of balance in his world of…See More

Delaying Christmas

[caption id="attachment_417" align="alignleft" width="200"] Photo from FreeDigitalPhotos.net[/caption]Christmas is just a few weeks away, yet the only decoration in our house is our advent calendar. Our tree is still tucked (read: lost) in the garage, presents haven't purchased much less wrapped and it will stay that way until probably the last week of January. Being a military family,…See More

Awakenings

In 1990, when the Robin Williams/Robert DeNiro movie Awakenings came out, I had an epiphany: I wanted to help people; I wanted to become a doctor. Fast forward a few years to a nursing scholarship, marriage and Navy life, a child, and adoptions. A degree in microbiology is as far as I got towards living my dream. Or so I thought. This movie is about a doctor who offers "catatonic victims of an encephalitis epidemic" a chance to…See More

Special Needs Parenting – I Quit! (…Can I do that?)

When I picked Ted up from school today, his teacher came out to talk to me. That doesn’t immediately mean trouble, but more often than not, it does. Especially as of late. He’s in a self-contained, co-op autism classroom. Four kiddos, one teacher and an aide. Pretty good ratio. And yet…Today, apparently, was (by my count) the fourth…See More

Strategies for a Special Needs Family Vacation

Whether you are going over the river and through the woods, or flipping family the fat finger and taking a Disney cruise this holiday season, chances are you are planning some sort of getaway. Beyond standard planning and packing, throw in special needs to the mix, and you've just intensified your vaca pre-planning by at least tenfold. It’s been beat to death, but it gets redone every…See More

Help for Victims of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a critical concern in the military, and is recognized every October through Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The anonymous blog that we published earlier today is incredibly heartbreaking, but real. Many spouses have experienced some form of domestic abuse in their marriage, and there is rarely an easy solution. We want everyone to know that there…See More

Special Happens

I am pregnant. This wasn't supposed to happen. We have a 16 year old biological daughter. We tried on and off to birth another spawn for about 10 years. We tried fertility treatment. I was told that, likely, unless a medical miracle happened, we would never create another life.So we went on to adopt.See, out daughter is amazing. She is brilliant, well behaved, can speak four languages and play two instruments. We figured we did an amazing job, and clearly had the parenting thing down. We were…See More

Thanks Kelly!  I had fun chatting with you in March and we should do that more often!  I'll program your number in my cell, for handy reference!  Right now my biggest issue is my lawn.  I've asked Operation Homefront, GreenCares for military, and local people to no avail...I'm waiting for the key to the John Deere arrive so I can cut the lawn.  Such is the life, you learn who you can truly rely on and right now, it's myself.  Have a wonderful weekend!!
